It’s Summer which means it’s time to embrace the sunshine and get outdoors. There’s nothing better than settling down to a lovely picnic in the outside or getting some fresh air whilst you have a bite to eat at lunch. This time of year also brings some wonderful foods into season. The sunshine makes for ideal growing conditions, particularly for potatoes which is why a number of varieties are in season throughout June. We’ve listed some of the top tasty foods in season at the moment along with the tasty Potato.IE recipes you could use to make the most of the freshness! 


Gnocci with Tomato and Basil

Tomato is in full bloom at the moment! Here’s a beautiful Italian-inspired gnocci recipe with the in-season tomato in the spotlight. The recipe finds fresh chopped tomatoes mixed in with the yummy flavours of mozzarella, garlic and basil. Gnocci is born out of the mixture of fluffy potatoes and flour, rooster potatoes are the best for this and luckily they’re also in season! Not only will you learn how to make gnocci for this recipe, but you’ll also be able to take this method and apply this base ingredient to your own creations.


Asparagus and Feta Frittata

Asparagus is another fresh, in-season ingredient. Asparagus has many delicious uses, and this potato frittata is one of our favourites! It allows the natural salty flavours of the asparagus to mingle with feta cheese and spring onions in a hearty frittata base. Indian Style Lamb, Potato & Aubergine Dhansak Curry

Aubergine is in-season throughout the summer months. Check out this delicious curry recipe which mixes lamb, tomatoes (also in season!), ginger and lentils in a dhansak curry sauce. Ideal for a little summer spice especially when served up with some cooling natural yoghurt!


Several potato varieties are currently in season:

Rooster - Rooster spuds are the most versatile, one of the all-rounders which finds its home in steaming, chipping/wedges, baking, boiling, mashing and roasting! Try out the Rooster with this Indian Potato Rosti with Haddock and Poached Egg!

Kerr’s Pink - Kerr's Pink potatoes are a lovely white flowered crop finding its place in steaming, chipping, baking and boiling.  

Golden Wonder - The Golden Wonder variety is a delicious floury style of potato, and is great for steaming, chipping, baking and roasting! 

Record - The growth of this tasty variety is limited to select parts of Ireland, particularly the West and midlands. It's only available in a few spots throughout the year so catch them while you can!
