National Potato Day celebrates the potato and its role in international cuisine

Potatoes can carry so many flavours and are used in virtually every culture

Ireland’s love affair with the potato is as strong as ever, with Irish households set to work their way through an estimated 117 million packs of potatoes this year.

The great taste of one of the nation’s favourite foods will be celebrated this Friday (7th October) through National Potato Day, which highlights the versatility of the popular vegetable.

Research shows that the potato is still Ireland’s most popular main meal carb, in fact:

  • Potatoes are purchased every two seconds in Irish retailers
  • 97% of Irish families buy potatoes
  • An estimated 1.65 million households purchase potatoes annually
  • This year, it is expected that we’ll spend in the region of €201 million on potatoes!
  • On average, we buy them 37 times a year
  • The most popular potato variety is the Rooster, making up 58% of sales.

There are many factors that make the potato so popular – they are naturally fat, salt and gluten free, perfect for health-conscious people, but also truly international as they can be used in almost every type of cuisine. Despite this, ambassador chef Mark Moriarty thinks Irish people are still a bit conservative when it comes to cooking potatoes and urges us to try adding them to any Thai, Caribbean and Mexican dishes for a taste of something new.
